The more I look at my life... Sep. 11th, 2008 @ 09:29 am

D&D 4e is back to the beginning... Jun. 1st, 2008 @ 10:40 pm
I know, long time no post but something hit me today about 4e...

I had been playing the sample games and reading through a copy of the rules that I got my paws on (I'll still be buying the full set so I don't feel it is cheating :) ). Something had been nagging me about the playstyle. It seemed overly simple - mathematical - almost being to the point of spreadsheet data. But I couldn't put my finger on EXACTLY what it was that was irking me.

Then I read the 'forward' that is found on page 7 in the Player's Handbook called "A History of D&D." Here it describes how Gary Gygax began the D&D fame by putting together the ruleset called "Chainmail" - where he added fantasy aspects to minature wargaming. Things progressed from there and now, 30 years later, with the release of D&D 4e, I realized what had been bugging me. The rules read as if it is a minatures wargame. The only difference is that instead of platoons, you have single characters.

So, in a nutshell, D&D has spent the last 30 years evolving into its now current form - which is what it was like when it was first created. A minature's strategy game.

Of course, this is just my opinion, I could be wrong. Oh, and I will be playing it as I have friends who can turn any type of system into a fun RP experience.

Lucid dreaming + drug withdrawl = Interesting new LARP! Dec. 6th, 2007 @ 05:27 am
Due to a clerical error, I have been without one of my medications for over 4 days now. I have had a certain 'experience' happen to me twice in my life and it has now happened a third time - usually due to sleep dep and me forgetting my meds. So it isn't overly worrisome however this time it got a little personal.

Long, winded background cut to get to the meat - I tend to be long-winded at 5:30amCollapse )

Now comes the wierd part. In my dream, it felt that Cindy was actually there - connected to the dream as well. That we could communicate over the distance all these years later. This is how the conversation went.

"Hey Cindy!"
"Hello Mark!"
"We sure did have some fun together at this game, eh?"
"Yeah, and afterwards too..." *smile*
"Listen, why don't we get in contact with each other?"
"What has it been, Mark, 10 years?"
"More or less."
"I don't think it is a good idea. I'm probably married by now."
"Well I wasn't suggesting..."
"I know, but what we had at this moment in time is special, and just talking we'd try to recapture it and it will just fail."
"You know, you're right. I didn't mean to sound all desperate and stuff."
"You didn't. Just remember, we had a great time together."
"I will. And you have a great life, Sandy, Sandy, sandy..."
"That's Cindy!" *she says with a crooked, mock scowl*
*I fade into conciousness with a devilish giggle.*

I wonder who Cindy actually was in my life. I don't know at this point but it was profound enough to have me get up at 5:30am and write this down.

So, anyone up for a Pirate, Vampire/Drageran LARP? :D

Oh and if such a LARP has been done AND I attended - then tell me who the dang hell is Cindy? ;)

**EDIT** - After rereading this, I believe I know who Cindy is but it is still, IMO, profound to me so I'm not deleting it. :P

P.S. - Oh, I should also mention there was a D&D/Vampire crossbreed game also in my dreams involving Vampires and Duegar (dark Dwarves) around my old middle school. However, I didn't like this one as it was powergamed by the people who ran it.

0.9% of the US army are AWOL Nov. 16th, 2007 @ 04:25 pm

"According to the Army, about nine in every 1,000 soldiers deserted in fiscal year 2007, which ended Sept. 30, compared to nearly seven per 1,000 a year earlier. Overall, 4,698 soldiers deserted this year, compared to 3,301 last year."

Sleep doctor is fulla zzzz's Nov. 15th, 2007 @ 12:42 pm
So I spent half an hour with a sleep specialist. This is the second one I've been to and her name is, ready for this, Dr. Kwack.

I fill out the questionnaire, talk to her for 15 minutes informing her that I can't get to sleep until around 2 and I am usually up by 6-7. Are you ready for her prescribed therapy?

"Go to sleep earlier."

She wants me to try and readjust my sacadian(sp) rthyms (sp again) so that I can elongate the go to bed time until it is around 10 or 11. And, no matter how much I tried to tell her that it doesn't help if I can't fall asleep until 2, she just kept on saying I should try to go to sleep earlier.

In her mind, it isn't the quality of the sleep, it's the quantity.

I have another meeting with her in 6 weeks. No matter what the outcome, I'm going to say, "I tried it, I'm still tired, give me the damn mask!" - the mask referring to the machine they use to get over sleep apnia. Oh, and it didn't seem to matter to her that my girlfriend has seen me stop breathing while I slept. Just go to sleep earlier - oh, and without any sleep aids.

Okey, I am sure I am way behind the curve on this one, but I logged onto WoW yesterday after the 2.3 patch and I was dumbfounded. I can understand a little about adding in to the radar the location of all of the quest givers - not just the ones you have completed a quest for but also ones that will offer you a quest.

But I was running a quest that required you to 'investigate' some explosives at the dam. You are suppose to search around and find them. Well, as I approached the area I knew where they were (since I ran the quest a few times before), the explosives were revealed on the map! I need to check some of the other 'hunting' quests but now trying to find something is as hard as looking to the right hand corner of your monitor.

I am currently trying to figure out the correct key-commands to simply let the game play itself while I watch.

You are surrounded by muppets. But that is okay because they are your friends and have shown many times that they can be trusted. Now if only you could stop being bothered about wormholes.
